ARK

ARK

// Steam keys from £29.92

ARK dumps you on the beaches of a massive, foreboding island with just enough clothing to stay modest and your own two fists. From there, the challenge is to stay fed and hydrated while avoiding a huge variety of terrifyingly detailed dinosaurs and other beasts long enough to progress up the tech tree. Early on, you might be taking out dilophosaurs with throwing spears and hoping a triceratops doesn’t come and knock your thatch hut over in the middle of the night.

Thirty hours later, you may preside from a sturdy stone castle from atop which you snipe pterasaurs out of the air with a rifle. By the endgame, it’s possible to have a massive steel fortress full of blast furnaces, complete with electric lighting and gas generators, churning out components for building rocket launchers and SCUBA gear.

Worms Revolution

Worms Revolution

// Steam keys from £1.44

For 17 years now, Team17 has been pitting worms against one another in deadly warfare. Oh sure, the presentation has always been colourful, and the tone comedic, but make no mistake, victory on this battlefield requires skill and tactical nous. Worms has always been something of a sandbox experience at its core, you see. Two or more teams of worms are randomly positioned on a map, each with the same toolbox of weapons and items. The gameplay is turn-based, with each player having a short amount of time to move one or more of their forces and attempt to take out the opposition. Making the most of each move is easier said than done.

Should you get Worms Revolution? Well, if you’re a lapsed Worms player, then absolutely. All told, this is a great game for a great price.

GTA V

GTA V

// Steam keys from £22.58

Grand Theft Auto V is an intelligent, wickedly comic, and bitingly relevant commentary on contemporary, post-economic crisis America. Everything about it drips satire: it rips into the Millennial generation, celebrities, the far right, the far left, the middle class, the media... Nothing is safe from Rockstar’s sharp tongue, including modern video games. One prominent supporting character spends most of his time in his room shouting sexual threats at people on a headset whilst playing a first-person shooter called Righteous Slaughter (“Rated PG – pretty much the same as the last game.”) It’s not exactly subtle – he literally has the word “Entitled” tattooed on his neck, and the in-game radio and TV’s outright piss-takes don’t leave much to the imagination – but it is often extremely funny, and sometimes provocative with it.

ARMA 3

ARMA 3

// Steam keys from £22.36

Simulation isn't the defining aspect of Arma. It's scale.

The enormity of the map is the foundation for the experiences that distinguish Bohemia Interactive's flagship franchise. It's what makes radios, topographical maps, binoculars, and compasses practical equipment in an FPS. It's what allows for kilometer-long headshots and coordinated convoy raids. It's what makes using your eyes to spot hints of enemies--muzzle flashes, tracers, gunsmoke--as valuable as being a crack shot.

Bohemia's graphical improvements are substantial enough to make Arma 3 one of the most visually impressive games on any platform. Altis is rendered with incredible clarity, illuminated by lighting that produces pink sunsets, blinding solar glare, and golden afternoons.

Pool Nation

Pool Nation

// Steam keys from £0.99

For 2 players, a game you can just jump into and play a few frames, great late at night, especially with a few beers.

Yes, it’s a pool game, and you could argue that there’s not much more to say beyond that. But pool is a rare sight on the PC, unless it’s of the top-down Flash variety, and this is a bloody good example of the form.

In fact it could be the shiniest game to ever grace a PC. Cherry Pop Games shows that this is anything but a port to the PC but rather an upgraded version that took everything that made the 360 version great and added even more.

Plus, it's got some great music... No, wait! I'm lying, the music's crap, even after a few beers but the graphics are great.

Red Orchestra 2

Red Orchestra 2

// Steam keys from £4.95

A World War II-themed tactical first-person shooter. Realistic guns, with bullet drop and spin. The game also takes away many elements of a traditional HUD, like an ammo counter, forcing players to remember, or manually check, the approximate number of rounds that are left in the gun's magazine. When reloading a weapon, the character checks the weight of the new magazine and determines if it is heavy or light.

The cover system allows players to hide behind all objects to avoid gunfire. While in cover, players can peek out or fire blindly. However, the shape, size and, composition of the object changes its effectiveness at protecting the player. Health does not regenerate, but non-fatal wounds must still be bandaged so no more health is lost through blood loss.
